    Overview

Driven by a higher global demand for commodities, FDI in Latin America has rebounded by 56% in 2021 from the pandemic slump, according to UNCTAD. Investors who were quick to capture the opportunities provided by the tech boom during the crisis are now looking at other sectors’ long-term prospects boosted by a growing middle class, a very young population and high digital adoption rates. The proximity to the U.S. and low labour costs also open significant nearshoring avenues.

The coordinated, cross-border, and pragmatic responses witnessed over the last two years highlighted the need to fast-track innovative and sustainable solutions to structural problems. Latin America is at the forefront of emerging opportunities in terms of technology, energy transition, green markets and jobs, provided it embraces long-delayed reforms to boost productivity, increase competition, improve education, and address inequality. Often, the region’s smaller, investment-friendly economies present opportunities, not fully grasped.

The Financial Times in collaboration with Millicom are pleased to host the Spotlight on Latin America Briefing to discuss how ambitious resets of policy frameworks in Central America and the rest of the region can foster further investment. The discussion will be focussed on how investors can identify the hidden gems and devise synergies to escalate investments that would bring resilient, inclusive and sustainable growth to Latin America
